Guidance Counseling

The mission of Excel School’s comprehensive counseling and guidance program is to prepare every student socially, academically, and emotionally for present and future challenges. Students are provided with opportunities to gain an understanding of self and others, to participate in educational and occupational exploration, and to pursue planning opportunities in an environment that is safe, caring, and encouraging. Counselors work in collaborative partnerships with students, educators, parents, and community members to empower students to reach their highest level as productive members of society.

At the elementary level, the counselor assists students in their efforts to learn the skills and attitudes required for school success. Students regularly participate in classroom guidance lessons aimed at development in the areas of academics, personal/social, and career exploration. Some examples of guidance lessons include bully prevention, decision making, respect for self and others, and listening skills. Students are also able to meet with the counselor individually and in small groups. Students can be referred to the counselor for services by teachers, parents, administrators, or self referrals.

The high school counseling and guidance program builds on the goals from the elementary guidance plan. The counselor meets with students to help them develop a four year educational plan and tracks their progress toward their goals throughout the remainder of their high school years. Students participate in activities that help them fulfill their goals following graduation. The high school counselor works directly with students, individually and in small groups, to deal with unique or problem-centered concerns. Students, parents, teachers, and/or administrators may also refer students for high school counseling services.
